Foundation with 4.9mm cell size made of disease-free beeswax in Special size
Mobile beekeeping has been used for approximately 120 years, and the use of frames made the bees' brood nest mobile. Since then, bees have been given wax sheets with pre-formed honeycomb patterns to promote even and faster comb construction. However, the use of foundation also increased cell size. To counteract this trend, many beekeepers are reducing cell size back to its original size. In addition, larger cells made bees more susceptible to diseases such as the Varroa mite, which led to rapid bacterial and viral spread. Thus, beekeeping has shifted toward breeding a more resistant bee. The 4.9mm cell size corresponds to the size of cells that bees historically built in the wild. This size allows bees to produce smaller worker bees, which leads to a healthier and more resilient colony. Unfortunately, many bees have lost the genetics for building smaller cells, which requires a high degree of patience to develop.
We can assist you in transitioning and offer custom wax conversion with your own beeswax. Cell sizes available: 4.9mm, 5.0mm, 5.1mm, and 5.4mm.
