The German Brother Adam was head of the beekeeping department at Buckfast Monastery for many years. His experience and skills have fundamentally changed beekeeping and the breeding of queens. He was the first to use crossbreeding in beekeeping and bred a bee that today bears the name of Buckfast Monastery, the Buckfast bee.

The work of Brother Adam, whose German name was Karl Kehrle, laid a completely new foundation for successful beekeeping.
One of the results of his work is the foundation of the regional associations of Buckfast beekeepers.
