Kiel mating box made of polystyrene
The Kiel mating box is manufactured by Stehr from rigid polystyrene foam. The advantages of polystyrene compared to other materials are its high thermal insulation properties and its high water vapor diffusion openness, thus regulating humidity in the interior. This results in the best climatic conditions for the bees. The ventilation slider attached to the bottom is also used to fill the mating box with care bees for the queen.

The inner walls of the basic body of the Kiel mating box are deliberately slanted so that the bees do not connect their combs to the inner walls. This means that frames can be dispensed with in the mating box.Wooden strips with grooves are used, into which center wall strips are inserted, and there are recessed pockets for four strips in the Kiel mating box.As the food pocket is removable, two more strips can be inserted if required.The strips with the combs are securely positioned in the pockets and cannot slip during transportation to the hive.
The bottom of the Kiel mating box is fitted with a slider with ventilation grille. This can be slid into various positions:
- Filling with bees
- Ventilation
- Flight hole open or closed
As an alternative to the entrance hole at the bottom, there is another entrance hole at the front which can be closed by a rotary slide, has a slit the size of a barrier grid or can be fully opened.
The lid closes flush with the outer dimensions of the Kiel mating box, a circumferential recess largely prevents bees from being crushed. There are four recesses in the lid into which the feet of the Kiel mating box fit so that several can be placed on top of each other or transported without slipping.
